The public library system of Providence, Rhode Island provides a wide selection of information in print, video, audio and graphic formats for its patrons’ borrowing convenience. The Smell Supplement to the Providence Public Library was created to fill a perceived gap in the library’s collection. Patrons of several library branches shared their ideas and memories about significant smells. From these interviews, two copies of a twenty-one volume scratch and sniff collection of important smells was compiled and added to the library’s circulating collection. This project would not have been possible without the enthusiasm of the library patrons and help of several chemists in the flavor and fragrance industry.
