This is San Jose Calling (Radio Nonchalance), commissioned by ZER01, was a pirate radio transmission that recreated portions of radio innovator, Charles Herrold’s original transmissions. This FM broadcast reached the blocks surrounding the biennial; and was also mirrored by a web-radio ‘net-cast’ that could be streamed through smart phones.
Listeners were treated to programming that guided them through the immediate area on a journey of discovery through the shady past of San Jose’s pioneering days in broadcast radio. Participants were lead toward secret pathways and hidden installations, encouraging them to ‘tune in’ to the untapped or unnoticed possibilities throughout the urban landscape. The audio also played out a radio drama that combined elements of the contemporary streetscape with echoes of the first radio broadcasts ever made.
